Recent activities with Asian Development Bank

HIA Capacity Building

The Centre is working with Asian Development Bank to strengthen capacity in Health Impact Assessment across the Asian Region.

HIA Curriculum Development in the Mekong Region

This project developed HIA curricula to be implemented in universities from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. A survey was conducted to determine information related to current teaching and research capacity and activities. Draft curriculum for three HIA courses were developed and discussed at a Regional HIA Curriculum Development Workshop in Bangkok in March 2016. Forty representatives from both the health and environment sectors from university and government departments from attended as well as facilitators from the WHO Centre and ADB. Feedback from the participants was incorporated into the final curriculum and a series of recommendations related to further development of course content, research, shared knowledge and promotion of HIA were made.

HIA Certificate Course Development

Staff from the Centre developed teaching materials for a 5 day HIA Certificate Course. The course included a full set of lectures, tutorials and resource materials and was based on the curriculum developed during the Bangkok workshop. These materials have been translated into other languages for delivery across the Mekong region.

Training of Trainers

Helen Brown, Dianne Katscherian and Jeffery Spickett facilitated a 5-day Training of Trainers workshop in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in September, 2017. The workshop was to train participants to deliver the HIA Certificate Course. Attendees included staff from universities and government agencies in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Partnership and Advocacy Program

The WHO Centre has entered into a Partnership and Advocacy Program with the Asian Development Bank. The program aims to build capacity in HIA in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. In addition to the ongoing development and delivery of HIA teaching and training materials the Centre will also be responsible for the establishment of a HIA network.
